For the first time, Britain has allowed an oral antibiotic used to treat chlamydia to be sold without prescription, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said on Wednesday. People over 16 will be able to buy the azithromycin pill Clamelle, manufactured by Icelandic drugmaker Actavis, after testing positive for the infection. The drug will also be made available over-the-counter (OTC) for their sexual partners. The new regulation will come into effect later this year.

A 29-year-old man, suspected to be on drugs, was arrested in the northern Philippines on Tuesday after he reportedly killed a 14-year-old girl and ate her heart and liver. Reports reaching the capital indicate Rommel Jandoc was allegedly high on prohibited drugs and killed Catherine Madriaga. Both the suspect and his victim are from the Pugo, a small village in Bauang, La Union, northern Philippines.

A 12-year-old boy here was cured of a rare form of Parkinson's disease after taking drugs to treat the neurological and muscular disorder. Parkinson's expert Dr. Ali Rajput in Saskatchewan province prescribed Sinemet to Andrew Carnegie after diagnosing him with hemiparkinsonism-hemiatrophy syndrome (HSS) in May. The drug instantly eliminated symptoms of the disease and now the boy can move normally.

Methadone, an agent used to break addiction to drugs, has ability to destroy leukemia cells without harming healthy cells, a study has found. The study, published in the August 1 issue of Cancer Research, suggests that methadone holds promise especially in patients whose cancer no longer responds to chemotherapy and radiation.

The small print underneath says, "Please help us, call Cincinnati City Council. "Fed up with blatant drug dealing and prostitution in his neighborhood, apartment building owner John Wallen put up the $400 sign in an effort to get authorities to crack down on the criminal activity on Churchill Street in Cincinnati, where his building of six units is down to one tenant. He told the Cincinnati Enquirer that the heavy crime at night is driving his tenants away.
