About 100 college presidents from universities across the U.S. are asking legislators to lower the legal drinking age to 18 from 21.

The officials organized a movement called Amethyst Initiative a year ago to push to amend current drinking age laws, which they said leads to dangerous binge drinking on college grounds.

John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College in Vermont, explained that the law is routinely broken because students find it unfair, unjust and discriminatory.

Other colleges which belong to the Initiative were Syracuse University, Morehouse College and Lake Forest College.

However, the Mothers Against Drunk Driving opposed the move because they fear it will lead to more deadly vehicular accidents. Both groups agree college drinking is a major problem.

According to a study more than 40 percent of college students have at least one symptom of alcohol abuse or dependence. Another research said more than 500,000 full-time students attending four-year colleges sustain injuries attributed to drinking, while 1,700 die from drink-related accidents.
