An elephant killed a female handler Friday at The Elephant Sanctuary in southern Tennesse. Winkie, the elephant, has a history of being dangerous as she has injured several other handlers in the past. Spokesperson for the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Center Doug Markham said Winkie kicked or stepped on the woman and injured a male handler who tried to help his co-worker. The woman died "on the spot," Markham adds.

Chinese officials will be using bananas and sugar to try to lure hungry elephants away from farmlands. According to a Reuters report, three villagers were killed by elephants around nature reserves in Xishuangbanna in the southwest province of Yunnan. Also, 12,000 families have reported that their crops were destroyed last year to elephants.

Sri Lanka's celebrity elephant, Raja, has fallen ill after eating too many sweets and chocolates given to him as gifts in part of the Buddhist new year celebrations. Thousands of Sri Lankans have paid a visit to Raja, 45, ahead of the new year celebration on Thursday, offering homemade cookies deep fried in coconut oil, chocolates, rice cooked in thick milk and fermented slices of sweet pineapple.
