It looks like England's heartache after their defeat at the World Cup has somehow extended to the European travel industry.

Still sulking after having their team lose their quarterfinals match against Portugal, many English tourists have decided to shun a holiday retreat under the Portugal sun, according to the UK travel industry.

Although travel companies such as Thomas Cook have reported strong business sales following England's defeat in Germany - with bookings increasing by 35 percent - very few travelers are flying in to Lisbon or any of Portugal's many resort getaways.

According to the Guardian, John Bevan, travel director at Lastminute.com says 80 percent of its bookings in the past week were for departures for the following two weeks, with many English soccer fans wanting to get away from the sulking and heartache.

Bevan says: "Three-quarters of searches on lastminute.com since England's defeat have not included a specific destination. People are choosing to 'show me all', which highlights the public's desire to get out of the country and get over Saturday's heartbreak.

"Last week Portugal was our fourth most-searched destination but since Saturday it's fallen down to 15th place. We expect interest will bounce back but at the moment the loss is still a bit raw.

"But we hope that English holidaymakers don't boycott the Algarve for long as a result of the match."
