An England man paid a 52 year old speeding citation this week. He said he found the citation in an old coat and his conscious is clear now that he settled up with Philadelphia Fairmont Park officials.
John Gedge, 84 now lives in a East Sussex nursing home in England. He mailed a letter with a five pound note and the 1954 traffic citation.
Gedge said he was visiting Philadelphia 52 years ago when police nabbed him for going 55 mph-20 miles over the speed limit, according to reports.
"It slipped my mind," Gedge said.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Gedge also admitted that he had been in trouble with the law before and even spent some time in prison. But he added that Englishmen always pay their debt.
"I thought, blimey. I've got to pay, that's it," Gedge said. "I had the fiver to do it and I'm very happy I did."
The five pounds Gedge sent was worth $14 then but is now only worth $9. He reportedly sent the note to the Old Park Guard Headquarters on Parkside Avenue, which is no longer there. The note made it's way to the park's special-events office.
"What I want to do is frame it - the letter, the five pound note, and the citation," said Mark A. Focht, park executive director
