Indian police force about 200 pornography watchers to do sit-ups in public to embarass them and discourage them from watching the illegally screened smut. Newspaper reports indicate police raided a cinema in the Balasore district in the eastern state of Orissa, forcing audience members, some as young as 17, to do 10 sit-ups each in a public square, under the watchful eyes of onlookers.

Jeanette Passalaqua, 32, has filed a suit against Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Southern California Permanente Medical Group Inc. , in San Bernardino County state court. In June 2004, Passalaqua's husband, Steven Passalaqua, was asked by Kaiser staff to hold and steady his wife while an employee inserted an epidural needle into her back, court papers said.

The protective housing unit in Corcoran State Prison, about 50 miles south of Fresno, is considered the safest place for an inmate to reside within the California prison system. Designed to protect famous convicts from possible attacks, it houses mass murderers like Charles Manson, and high-profile criminals like Sirhan Sirhan, one of the first inmates placed in the unit, where he passed the time playing chess and working for 13 cents an hour as an administrative clerk.
