A former Liberal senator from western Quebec has been charged with fraud after an Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) investigation linked him to misappropriated funds.

Raymond Lavigne, who was expelled from the Liberal caucus in an unrelated matter, was charged with fraud, breach of trust and obstruction of justice in the culmination of an investigation that began in August 2006.

Lavigne was expelled from the Liberal caucus after allegations that he was using a Senate staffer to do yard work at his home.

The senator was expelled in June 2006 and ordered to pay back $23,500 to the Senate, which he agreed to do.
