British Wildlife Guide Teaches Heron To Fly

A local wildlife guide has taught an orphaned heron how to fly by flapping his arms and squawking. Gary Zammit, a 42-year old wildlife expert at the Gwel an Mor complex in Portreath, Cornwall, said that he managed to teach Dude, a heron he raised from a chick to an adult, how to take to the skies by first running across the field with food in his pockets. The food led the bird to follow Zammit, who then spread his arms and flapped them.

1,000 Pound Squid Defrosted For Study In New Zealand

Marine biologists in New Zealand are thawing out a 1,000 pound squid from a huge ice block in order to study it. The analysis of the 1,089-pound, 26-foot long colossal squid, set to begin Wednesday, will help determine how the creatures live and breed. The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa will broadcast the thawing and examination live on the Internet.

Englishman Discovers Rare Roman Coins

A man in search of buried treasure struck gold, literally, when he found a pair of coins that bore the image of Emperor Carausius. Derrick Fretwell, 57, reportedly found the coins while digging in a field by Ashbourne. The coins bore the portrait of Emperor Carausius, a Roman commander. The coins and were said to be 90 percent pure gold.

Expert: English Almost At One Million Words

The English language has almost reached the one-million-word mark, according to an expert running a website that tracks the language's development. Paul Payack of the Global Language Monitor says that the English language's expansion was greatly aided by the addition of email and Internet lingo. These technology-based means of communication, according to Payack, have resulted in the rise of now-common phrases at a significant speed.

Woman Uses Antifreeze On Attempted Murder Of Husband

A housewife was convicted of attempted murder after she tried to kill her husband by mixing antifreeze into their wedding anniversary dinner. The court of Stafford Crown found Kate Knight, 28, guilty of attempted murder after she laced her husband's curry and red wine with antifreeze back in 2005. Lee's ingestion of the tainted food and drink caused him to suffer from brain damage, and irreversible kidney failure.
