An elderly man in Portugal takes revenge on his landlord by blowing up his apartment, causing part of the five-floor Lisbon block to collapse and catch fire. Neighbors reported the 80-year-old man had threatened to pour petrol on his floor and set it alight after being evicted by his landlord.

Officials say fear spread among people living near the coast of Sri Lanka's captial as the sound of fighter jets was mistaken for an explosion. Police initially said there had been an explosion about nine miles from Colombo, and that it had been caused by a sea mine planted by Tamil Tiger rebels.

A hand grenade from the Second World War was found in a batch of potatoes in an English factory's chip-making machine, prompting an evacuation of the plant. A day earlier, the tip of a shell was found in the same machine.

A bomb scare hit a University when two bags containing underwear and cake were discovered with a message that promised of an explosion if opened. Police evacuated Kyushu University's pharmacology department in southern Japan early Tuesday and called in the bomb squad after a staff member found a white paper bag with the warning.
