Fist fights broke out and police made a handful of arrests at a neo-Nazi rally today before a march through a predominantly black neighborhood.
About 30 members of the National Socialist Movement, many wearing khaki uniforms, black boots and red armbands with swastikas, marched through the historically black neighborhood of Parramore.
Seventeen arrests were made, for alleged crimes ranging from battery on a law enforcement officer to disorderly conduct to wearing a mask in public. Some 300 law enforcement officers are on hand, including horseback patrols, K-9 units and officers in riot gear.
A couple hundred counter-protesters also showed up along the parade route. There was one fight reported in the area of the counter-protesters. The Neo-Nazi participants were seen carrying posters and making Nazi gestures.
