A 53-year-year old visually blind golfer from Mahoning Township, Pa. has become the first totally blind female to record a hole-in-one.
Sheila Drummond, who lost her eyesight 26 years ago due to diabetes, achieved the remarkable turning point in her career on Sunday, recording an ace on the 144-yard, par-3 fourth hole at Mahoning Valley Country Club.
According to AP reports, Drummond, who was played with her husband and coach, Keith, and two friends in a steady rain, could actually hear her winning shot clearing a water hazard, flowing between traps, landing on the green, where it hit the flagstick before dropping into the hole.
"I heard it hit the pin. For a hole-in-one, you have to hit it onto the green, so it's a little bit of skill and a lot of luck," Drummond told the news agency.
Drummond is a member of the board of directors of the United States Blind Golfers Association. Though there have been accounts of several blind men getting a hole in one, the organization touts her to be the only blind female to record an ace.
