Authorities at a Lexington County School have suspended a kindergartner for possessing a weapon on school grounds. The five-year-old was taken to the school office after he was spotted using a folding pocket knife to open his pre-packaged lunch.

The student never threatened anyone at the school, and officials believe he was unaware he did anything wrong, Mary Beth Hill, spokeswoman for Lexington County School District 1 tells the Associated Press.

The incident happened at the Saxe Gothe Elementary School cafeteria, when a school employee saw the boy using his Swiss Army knife to open his lunch.

The boy was taken to the office and immediately suspended.

State law says it is illegal to bring any weapon onto school grounds, but the child is too young to face any criminal charges, Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said.

The boy, however, faces an expulsion hearing, Hill said.
