Police have convicted a former Franklin District Court security officer in a strange case of prostitution after he offered $20 to a couple for having sex in front of him.
Robert Theriault, 49, was convicted Tuesday after the couple testified that he convinced them that they would be testing bed sheets and condoms for an insurance company. The couple said they trusted Theriault because of his position as a court officer.
After initial hiccups, the couple readily performed the act of sex while Theriault watched because they admitted they needed money to pay a $500 speeding fine, AP reports. The couple became aware they were targets of prostitution after they read news accounts about another man who had accused the former court officer of a similar offer.
Denying all allegations, Theriault said that he only offered the couple, whom he met in court, jobs in a restaurant. Since New Hampshire's prostitution laws prohibit people from offering to pay for sex, Theriault faces a maximum of two years in jail and a $4,000 fine when he is sentenced.
