Attorney General Mike Cox announced on Tuesday that a former state Department employee Sandra May Wentworth pled guilty to 3 counts of embezzlement for embezzling more than $300,000 from the department of Veterans Affairs.

In September 2005, Cox also charged Wentworth's husband and son on related tax fraud charges. Cox says, "Sandra Wentworth admitted to stealing more than $300,000 from the State of Michigan, money that taxpayers intended to pay for services for our veterans."

Wentworth, 47, used a state credit card issued to her in her capacity as a buyer and manager for Veteran's Affairs buy more than $300,000 in illegal purchases that allegedly included a plasma television, equipment for her family-owned bowling alley business, personal exercise equipment, and furniture for her home.

Wentworth resigned from the department in July of 2004, after she was under investigation by the Michigan State Police Department.

Sandra Wentworth and her son, Eric Robert Krauss, 24 were arrested in September 2005 by Michigan State Police.

Her husband Wayne Leroy Wentworth, 56, turned himself in to investigators shortly thereafter.

Mrs. Wentworth pled guilty to 3 counts of embezzlement, all 10-year felonies.

As part of her plea agreement, Mrs. Wentworth has agreed to pay restitution in the amount of $314,151.30, the amount that investigators established was wrongfully taken, her sentencing has been postponed in light of her promise to pay back the funds.
