Shooting broke out Wednesday in the town of Banelos in the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico, when members of one Mexican family decided to close a rain-ravaged road due to an enormous pothole, angering another family intent on driving their transport truck through the obstacle. All involved were Tzotzil Indians.
The incident began with insults and ended with gunfire. The dispute between families ended with four dead.
According to the Mexican daily Reforma, various high caliber rifles were fired in the skirmish including one AR-15. Shootings are not uncommon in Chiapas, a lush but impoverished state of Mexico, often noted as a region of guerilla conflict with the Mexican government and indigenous strife. Much of the region remains poorly policed.
Photographs published in Reforma show locals standing about the pothole, which was quickly filled in and made ready for traffic.
