A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized with burns to his chest after his 5-year-old playmate shot him with a flare gun.

The 5-year-old boy shot his pal, wounding him in the arm and chest as the pair played together late Monday afternoon on the front steps of a home. The 4-year-old was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

According to reports, the flare gun belonged to a friend of the shooter's father who used it at work and stored it on the top shelf of a closet in his home. The flare gun's owner reportedly does not know how the 5-year-old got the flare gun.

Police reportedly contacted child-protective services, but no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
