An internet site has created heavy buzz, along with a new fashion statement: T-shirts, trucker hats, stickers, and coffee mugs bearing the logo "Free Katie," in reference to her relationship with actor Tom Cruise, which many skeptics insist is a publicity stunt.
The website proclaims itself to be dedicated to "the movement to liberate Katie, a young, gifted, actress held captive by forces we may never understand."
E!Online reports creator Sheila Cameron decided to launch the site after watching Cruise's appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show
Pounding his fist on the stage floor and jumping up and down on the couch, Cruise proclaimed to be ecstatic with his new love.
Cameron expresses surprise at the exposure of "Free Katie" since then. "We just thought it would be funny to make a few shirts and send the link around to friends. I never thought it would get the response it has," Cameron told E! Online via email.
She created the site to allow fans to express their opinions, both positive and negative, through an open forum.
During numerous interviews, Holmes insists she is head over heels with her new beau and said she misses him if he is gone for more than one hour.
