Senior residents of a local retirement center are protesting against plans to construct a funeral home right across the street.
Saying that the location of the proposed establishment would be a bit too much of a train, many older residents of the center signed a petition, showing the protest of about 100 residents of the Lake City Senior Center.
The petition is aimed to urge the City Council to revoke the permit issued to James Asper and Mary Hansen, of Aspen Funeral Home LLC, giving them the license to lease the building being eyed as the new funeral parlor.
According to Vickie Harrison, the senior center manager, the petition will be presented at a hearing scheduled for February 5.
"I don't like it at all," said Marg Dunkle, 65, one of the petition signers. "It kind of gives you an uncomfortable feeling."
Renee Evans, 55, echoed the sentiment.
"You have people in here who are already thinking about dying," the Coeur D'Alene Press quoted her.
Unaware of the petition until informed, Mary Hansen said that the funeral home's location was chosen because it was suitable for the business' needs. She said that it was not because of its proximity to the senior center.
"We find it a little disconcerting that they would think that location is intentional," the AP quoted Hansen.
"At this time, we are just waiting to here what the City Council is going to rule and we really have no other comments," Hansen continued.
Despite the majority of the residents showing their anger, there were discovered to be some who found the location of the funeral home as a practical convenience.
Doy Seng, 81, commented on the handiness of the location, and said that anyone who died in the center could merely be taken across the street.
"We're old here. We're all ready to go," Seng said. "I think it will be handy."
