Without a reservoir dedicated to supplying the expanding Atlanta, Georgia-area with water, residents face shortages. The situation has caused Georgia lawmakers to claim an 1818 survey setting the boundary with Tennessee was faulty. Now Georgia wants to move the state lines to lay claim on the Tennessee River.
A resolution to challenge the 1818 survey easily passed the Republican-controlled Georgia Senate and House, but Tennessee lawmakers say they won't cooperate with the effort.
Saying that the Georgia lawmakers were "idiots," Tennessee Rep. Gerald McCormick (R-Chattanooga) told the AP, "It's the silliest thing I've ever seen any group of Republicans do. I'm embarrassed that they would embarrass the party like that."
Chattanooga is just north of the state line.
According to CBS news, moving the state line to give Georgia a claim to the Tennessee River water would require an agreement between Congress and the states.
