A young girl is in serious condition after having been pecked several times by a rooster near her family's farm in rural Australia.

Doctor Claire Helm said the rooster's beak penetrated the 4-year-old girl's airway, causing a life-threatening injury. According to reports, the girl had been pecked three times by the animal. The wound to the throat had disabled the little girl.

Helm tells Australian radio, "It was quite surprising to see the deadliness of the aim."

The girl is having surgery at the children's hospital in Sydney, where doctors said she was in serious but stable condition.

No explanation was given for the attack.
