Coroners said Friday that a 17-year-old girl who died after being struck by a bicycle had a pre-existing brain condition that left her more vulnerable to the effects of impact.
Eveylyn E. Bolen, a special needs student, was walking on the school track in gym class with friends Wednesday when a 15-year-old boy who was riding the coach's bike accidentally struck her with the bicycle. WBST reported the boy told police he looked behind him because he thought he heard someone call his name, and when he turned forward again, Bolen was right in front of him. He slammed on the brakes, tumbling over the handlebars and onto Bolen.
School employees performed CPR on Bolen until emergency crews arrived, but she was pronounced dead Wednesday night.
Friday, the Allen County Coroner's office released their findings, which were that Bolen had an abnormality at the base of her skull that left her brain stem compromised. This abnormality they say, was a factor in the high-school junior's death.
The young man who caused the accident expressed deep remorse, according to reports.
