New Evidence: Columbus Traded Cheap Brass Shoelace Tags For Gold

According to Discovery News, new evidence shows that Christopher Columbus traded cheap brass shoelace tags for gold when he and his crew arrived in Cuba. Lead researcher Marcos MartinĂ³n-Torres claims that Columbus and his crew knew what they were doing when they ended up getting the better end of the deal. Gold was fairly in abundance in Cuba at the time.

200-Year-Old Dentures Go On Display In London

A 200-year-old pair of false teeth that belonged to the Archbishop of Narbonne went on display at the Museum of London Friday. Archaeologists found the teeth in the coffin of the archbishop, Arthur Richard Dillon, while digging at the St. Pancras graveyard, where the Channel Tunnel's new rail terminus will be built. The dentures, which are made of porcelain and contain gold springs, were still sitting in Dillon's mouth. It is thought he may have purchased them from Nicholas De Chemant, a prominent Parisian dentist.

The rare item - produced between 1642 and 1644 by the king's Dutch designer Abraham Van Der Dort and worth $4 when it was minted - has become the most expensive item of legal tender ever sold in Britain.

The earnings of the sale will benefit Girls Inc. , a nonprofit New York group that provides educational and recreational programs for girls ages 6 to 18 in high-risk areas.
