A 47-year old grandmother was refused an alcohol purchase because she did not have her identification and could not prove that she was over 18.
Initially thinking that the checkout assistant was joking, Tina MacNaughton-Jones realized that the employee of the Waitrose store was indeed serious in telling her she could not buy the red wine due to the lack of proof of her age, reported Breitbart.com
"I said, 'Are you speaking to me?' because I thought she might mean my daughter who was with me and she's 22," explained Mrs. MacNaughton-Jones, as quoted by BBC News. "And [the staff member] said 'yes.' So I said 'No I haven't got any ID on me'"
Mrs. MacNaughton-Jones continued, saying that her daughter Fiona stepped up and said "Well, I'm 22, you know this is my mom." Fiona backed up her claim by presenting her own identification.
The staff member was reported to have not believed her.
A spokesman for Waitrose responded to the situation, saying that despite their determination to uphold store policy and sell alcohol responsibly, "on this occasion it appears we were a little overzealous and apologize for any embarrassment caused."
