A homeless man was arrested after allegedly attacking four people with a chainsaw. The incident was said to have taken place at a local homeless shelter near the Jefferson City area.
The suspect was Matthew Watkins, 28, who was said to have injured the victims Saturday, while he was participating in a training program being offered at the Rev. Larry Rice's Mid-American Care Center.
Workers at the shelter were reportedly getting ready for an anniversary dinner to be held at the shelter when Watkins, who had been continually complaining about his problems with his mother, suddenly took a chainsaw from a workshop, and began to threaten people with it. Watkins was also said to have brandished a knife at one point, although authorities did not know exactly when.
Police were called to the shelter at around 2 p.m., reported the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The attack resulted in two people being injured by the chainsaw, and two by the knife. Two were taken to a local hospital, and were expected to make full recoveries.
Watkins reportedly surrendered his weapons and gave himself up without any incidents, as soon as the police arrived at the scene.
"We're just really thankful that it was not worse than it was," said Rev. Rice. "We'll continue to reach out and help people. If we don't, who will?"
The planned dinner was moved to the location across the street, and a prayer was added to the nights' agenda.
