Hong Kong's bustling central business district is falling victim to a rat infestation. Between January and June, the area's rat population soared from 0 to 17 percent, based on the number of rats attracted to every 100 pieces of bait.
Ho Yuk-yin, a consultant with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, blames poor maintenance at area restaurants , buildings, and dank, dark alleyways.
Government officials are handing out informational pamphlets to educate restaurant workers on proper methods of hygiene, food storage, garbage disposal, and rat prevention. Workers have also begun putting out rat poison.
This district is now the second-worst rat infested area in Hong Kong, after a shopping center in rural New Territories.
A rodent invasion over 20-percent is considered high.
