Chinese officials will be using bananas and sugar to try to lure hungry elephants away from farmlands.

According to a Reuters report, three villagers were killed by elephants around nature reserves in Xishuangbanna in the southwest province of Yunnan. Also, 12,000 families have reported that their crops were destroyed last year to elephants.

Wildlife officials have stated that they will be placing banana plantations and sugarcane planted a couple of miles away from the village. So far, about 170 acres have been put aside for the plantations.

The Yunnan province government set aside last April about $500,000 to compensate farmers for crops lost to hungry elephants.

Even though the government did not elaborate, they did state that the new dining initiative has had some mixed results.
