A 42-year-old woman narrowly escaped her husband's wrath after he shot at her with .22-calibre rifle when she failed to renew his driver's license.
Gary Alan Hemsted, a truck driver, has now been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting his wife, Lisa, in 2005. Hemsted pleaded no contest earlier this month to attempted voluntary manslaughter, using a firearm and causing great bodily injury in the wounding of his wife.
The 49-year-old man became angry after he was cited for driving with an expired license and instead blamed his wife for failing to renew it. He then threatened to shoot his wife's horse and fired a round from his rifle.
The shot somehow missed his wife and hit the family's barn. Lisa, 42, ran for her life while her husband gave chase in his pickup truck.
As she climbed over a fence to try to get away, her husband threatened her by saying "you're dead", and fired a shot that hit her in the right thigh. The incident came to the police's knowledge immediately, as a sheriff's patrol car was passing nearby.
