A farmer in eastern India has a 1-year-old calf that eats his chickens. The local veterinarian has never heard of meat-eating cows and doesn't know what to make of it, but some locals have a theory that the cow was a tiger in his previous life.

According to AP, the cow's owner, Ajit Ghosh, said that at first he thought that jackals were eating his poultry. One morning he got up very early to find out what was going on.

AFP quotes him as saying, "I guess the calf was a tiger in his previous birth. We were shocked to see that our one-month-old calf sneaked up to the coop, caught a little chick like a jungle cat and gobbled it up alive in seconds."

Now thousands of people have traveled to Ajit's village, Chandipur, to gawk at the flesh-eating cow. The cow has also gotten TV coverage in India's West Bengal state.

According to AP, local veterinarian Mihir Tripithy said, "I've never read or heard about cows turning carnivorous. They eat grass and other vegetarian food but not fish or other non-vegetarian stuff."

However, Umapati Chatterjee, a doctor at a Calcutta veterinary hospital, said the cow may be eating meat because it lacks certain minerals.

"I think the calf is suffering from pika, a rare disease caused by deficiency of salt and other minerals," Chatterjee said, according to AFP.
