Pass the Antacid! Iowa Falls can now crown itself home to the world's largest pizza.
On Satuday, twenty-six teams converted 4,000 pounds of cheese, 700 pounds of sauce and 9,500 sections of crust into a huge pie in the Iowa Falls -Alden High School parking lot.
The idea was the brainchild of Bill Bahr, manager of the local Pizza Ranch Restaurant, who was asked by his 16-year-old son how he could go about making a big pizza.
Bahr thought the idea to build the 129-by-92 foot pizza would offer the perfect opportunity to establish a community-supported effort and raise money for the school district.
Donations of $42,000 worth of ingredients were made and more than 200 people vounteered to put together the 50,000-slice pizza.
Adopting a production-line fashion, teams were assembled to smother a piece of dough with sauce, sprinkle it with cheese, and run a stack through the oven. The entire pie took two hours to assemble.
In order to be eligible for the Guiness World Records book, the pizza had to be cooked and be edible once it was made.
The oven took up most of the parking lot and was made of concrete blocks, perforated steel sheets and a 10-horsepower fan and burner.
The current Guinness Record was set in Norwood, South Africa in 1990, it was a round pizza 122 feet, 8 inches across.
Bahr says he does not want to unseat that record, but plans to submit his larger pizza to Guinness for a new record.
