Joan Martinek Barnes of Iowa never imagined in her wildest dreams that she would get back the wallet she lost 60 years ago in high school. It was a pleasant surprise for Barnes when a building engineer found her lost wallet this week while tracking down a broken water pipe.
Barnes, 75, who now lives in San Antonio, recalls losing her wallet when her coat was stolen at McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids in the late 1940s. AP quotes her as saying, "I don't remember all those details. I just remember Mr. Paxson (the principal) got the coat back. I didn't have many coats."
Though there was no cash found in the wallet, there was an activity card, a student ID card and a membership card for the YMCA's teen club.
It also contained two black-and-white photos of her then boyfriend in Air Force uniform and another picture of hers in college. Barnes graduated from McKinley in 1949. She got married and settled in Texas and has never been back to Cedar Rapids in the last 15 years.
