An Israeli ultra-Orthodox Jewish couple is facing possible charges of negligence after leaving behind their four-year-old daughter at the Ben-Gurion airport in Israel on Sunday to take a vacation in Paris, France.
Airport investigators said the couple, whose names were being withheld, were late for their flight to Paris on Sunday and rushed to the gate with their five children. Because of their mad dash to the gate, the parents forgot about their four-year-old daughter and learned she was missing after being told about it by flight attendants in mid-air.
A border police officer found the girl wandering in the airport departures hall, one of the busiest airports in Israel, particularly during summer when it is filled with families going on vacation.
The girl was crying and calling out for her mother, police said.
Policewoman Sagit Ben-Eden interviewed the girl and asked her of her last name and her parents' name. It was then that they learned the parents have boarded a San Dor flight to Paris an hour earlier.
Amnon Shmueli, commander of the airport's Passport Control told Ynet newspaper, "We tried to reach the parents the moment we discovered they were on the flight, but the plane was already on the runway."
"We then contacted the pilot, and when he confirmed that the family was on the plane, they were informed that they had forgotten their daughter and that she was at the airport."
An airline staff later accompanied the child to Paris to reunite her with her parents. The police planned to investigate the parents for possible negligence charge upon their return to Israel.
