Commander Shahar Ayalon, serves as both traffic police chief and speaker to foreign delegations in Israel and abroad; the latter due to his near-perfect English.
Somehow, he has found the time to compile a new tool that will prove invaluble to Israeli law enforcement: a Hebrew-English pocket-size dictionary.
Ayalon recently distributed his work, published several months ago, to senior officials across the country. The dictionary mostly contains police terminology, including sections on explosives, forensics, and police ranks.
He began working on the project during a stint as head of the Judea and Samaria police, where he would often find himself searching for the right words to use during lectures. After years of collecting random police terms on scattered notes, he felt it was time to compile a dictionary.
"Over the years I collected words from lectures and notes and finally asked myself why not just make a dictionary," he said. "I gathered all of the pamphlets put out by the police and began creating a dictionary for officers who travel abroad to lecture."
