Italian officials exhumed the body of Luigi Tenco, one of the country's most beloved singers, and put to rest any doubts that he had been murdered.

Tenco was found dead in his hotel room in January 1967. He had a single gunshot to his head. A note found near his body suggested that Tenco had killed himself after his song was eliminated from a music competition.

However, doubts about the nature of his death have lingered over the country for a number of years. However, the Sanremo magistrate, Mariano Gagliano, said he ordered the exhumation to prove that Tenco died of a gunshot wound.

"The Tenco case is definitively closed. Checks have confirmed that it was suicide," Gagliano was quoted as saying by the Italian media. According to Reuters, Italian State television has said it will take four months to submit a complete report regarding the case.
