Prisoners at Tihar Jial are earning their wages as authorities have focused their energies on creative activities. The inmates are making recycled paper items like bags and file covers and preparing biscuits, cakes, bread, pickles and potato chips on jail premises.

The Tihar Jail Bakery School, popularly known as TJ's is selling the stuff at reasonable price in the market.

"It was in 2000 that Tihar first attempted to sell its bread, biscuits and potato chips under the brand name TJ's. It did not make much headway then, as the jail's administration staff did not have the marketing expertise," said a jail official in a Gulf news report.

"It was limited for consumption within the jail as it was either available in the jail canteen or was sold to some government departments at reasonable rates." the official added.

Now as the market for the products is growing, the 1,000 inmates who were earlier wasting their precious lives are now employed within the jail premises and getting wages too.

As per the authorities, the move will also help the prisoners to start their living when they get out of the jail.

"It is an incentive for them," said assistant jail superintendent, R.K. Sharma. "It helps them in their rehabilitation as most prisoners do not know what to do with their lives after being released."

Authorities said the buyers of the products were happy with the quality of the stuff.
