A Japanese monkey escaped the Roanoke city zoo and fled to a nearby forest on Sunday. Officials shut down the park on Monday and embarked on a search in the neighboring forest where they heard her up the trees.
Dubbed Oops, the 20-pound Japanese macaque and her siblings were transferred from their cells for cleaning before she vanished early Sunday.
David Jobe, a zoo official noted, "We hope that because they're active in the daytime, she slept last night and woke up this morning hungry." He said, "We hope to take advantage of a hungry monkey."
The 11-year-old Oops is the youngest among the four members of the "snow monkeys" at the zoo. The species is furry, light brown in color with a red face. Jobe told ABC news, "Part of our concern for her is that it's the first time she's ever been anywhere else and we're sure she's frightened."
He has called on anyone who sets eye on the macaque to dial 911 admitting that Oops could grow dangerous in case someone tries to capture her and she gets frightened. Japanese macaques are usually 2 to 4 feet long. Their tails are shorter when compared to other species.
