Thailand's new military government is using a former beauty queen to help soften its image with the people.
The junta has cracked down on political freedom, including free speech, and hope Thawinan Khongkran, 1987's Miss Asia, can help restore public opinion in the armed forces.
Thawinan Khongkran tells reporters, "I consider it an honor. I did the best job I could."
Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Chulalongkorn University tells the Associated Press, "The Thai military is not media savvy so they're having to learn a lot of things quickly."
"Hence, the beauty queens."
The military has also instituted a new policy, forcing soldiers to smile at civilians. Female soldiers have also been brought in to help police Bangkok, since they are seen as softer towards children and tourists.
