High school kids will now be allowed to marry in Kansas after a new bill, which sets the minimum legal age for marriage at 15, receives final legislative approval.
According to The Wichita Eagle, Gov. Kathleen Sibelius is expected to sign the bill.
The UPI news agency says that under the bill, parental consent would be required for 16- and 17-year-olds to marry. A judge's consent would also be needed for 15-year-old brides or grooms.
The law was inspired by the Kansas marriage of a 22-year-old man and a 14-year-old pregnant girl from Nebraska. The couple remains legally married, although the husband is serving a prison term in Nebraska for statutory rape.
The only objection to the 15-year-old minimum came from Sen. Kay O'Connor, a Republican, who argued that pregnant teens might decide to have abortions if they were barred from marrying their sexual partners.
