Takeru Kobayashi captured his sixth straight title at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs Independence Day eating contest at Coney Island boardwalk Tuesday afternoon. Kobayashi set a new record by downing 53 3/4 dogs, winning the Yellow Mustard belt.

Kobayashi set the record two years ago by eating 53 1/2 of Nathan's best. According to the Associated Press, the famed eater once ate 17.7 pounds of pan-seared cow brains to win $25,000.

Joey Chestnut, reigning Wing Bowl champion, had an early lead but slowed down towards the end while Kobyashi maintained a steady speed. Chestnut crammed down 52 hot dogs and finished in second place.

Chestnut told ESPN, "I hit a wall. I just felt tired."

Tobayashi warned next year's competitors that he will eat even more hot dogs.

The competition included professional eating veterans such as Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas and Eric "Badlands" Booker. Thomas once ate 65 hard-boiled eggs in 6 1/2 minutes. Booker holds speed-eating records for pies and matzo balls.
