A 114-year-old Californian woman was named the oldest woman living on Earth after Maria De Jesus of Portugal died Friday, Gerontology Research Group said.
Gertrude Baines was born in small town in south Atlanta in 1894 and now lives at Western Convalescent Hospital west of USC in Los Angeles.
According to her social worker, Baines was unaware of her new status as the oldest woman living.
Social worker Linda Bell said no one brought up the news to her and Baines didn't mention anything.
Baines has made it to the national headlines two months ago when she cast her vote for U.S. President-elect Barack Obama, saying she is for the colored person and she is glad that U.S. is having a colored man in the White House.
