"Drugs and Sex For Sale, 24/7." That's what the large orange sign says in bold black letters that hangs outside one angry landlord's building. The small print underneath says, "Please help us, call Cincinnati City Council."
Fed up with blatant drug dealing and prostitution in his neighborhood, apartment building owner John Wallen put up the $400 sign in an effort to get authorities to crack down on the criminal activity on Churchill Street in Cincinnati, where his building of six units is down to one tenant. He told the Cincinnati Enquirer that the heavy crime at night is driving his tenants away.
One tenant who was literally moving out as she was interviewed, Crystal Myers, said she was leaving because there were 20-30 men who sell drugs out on the street every night, and that she can hear prostitutes saying how much they charge. She said none of the dealers or prostitutes live in the area.
Wallen told reporters that the police show up quickly when they're called, but the criminals simply run into the woods near the short street until the police leave, then they come right back out. He said he'd like to see more done to get them out of the area for good, that's why he's enlisting the help of city council.
Council member Roxanne Qualls told reporters she agrees that Wallen has a right to be angry, adding, "no one should have to live like this." She has vowed to find out why police aren't doing more. Since Wallen contacted her, police have removed underbrush in the area where dealers hide their paraphernalia.
