Las Vegas is known for its wild reputation and even wilder ad campaigns, including the now famous adage, "What happens here, stays here." But on Monday the city decided to use a different spokesman, and found it in an unlikely poster boy, Vice President Joe Biden.
In a full-page ad in USA Today, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority alluded to his latest verbal misadventure -- telling Matt Lauer on the "Today'' show last week that he "wouldn't go anywhere in confined places" because of the swine flu outbreak.
Pouncing on the VP's latest gaffe , the ad shows a photo of Biden with the caption, "Mr. Vice President, if you had said it here, no one would have known."
"It's not that it's going to Mexico. It's [that] you're in a confined aircraft. When one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft. That's me. ... "So, from my perspective, what it relates to is mitigation. If you're out in the middle of a field when someone sneezes, that's one thing. If you're in a closed aircraft or closed container or closed car or closed classroom, it's a different thing." he added.
Las Vegas tourism officials spent $77,740 on the one-time ad.
"I think everybody saw the comments that were made, and all we're trying to emphasize is, first and foremost, it is OK to have fun, and Las Vegas is the place to have fun," said Vince Alberta, vice president of public affairs for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
