Lightning struck the Brampton Centennial Park in Ontario on Wednesday afternoon, hitting a 26-year old woman and two boys aged 5 and 4. The three were hurt badly by the lightning, but are alive and confined in two hospitals.
The elder boy, 5-year old Kyus Caines and his playmate, a 4-year old who was not identified, are confined at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. The mother of Kyus, Dulce Caines, is at the Brampton Civic Hospital.
The lightning hit the soccer field located at Queen St. E and Main St. on Wednesday at about 2:20 p.m.
The bolt knocked down six people, but the three others managed to stand up after the hit.
The woman could not remember anything, according to her husband Oral Caines. Kyus is breathing on his own and shares the hospital room with his injured playmate. There were two other children in the vicinity - including Kyus' younger brother - when the lightning hit the park, but they were not hurt.
A 2006 study by Environment Canada and the University of Waterloo said 10 people die in Canada annually from lightning hits and 90 to 160 are hurt. Most of the deaths take place in Ontario during the months from June to August.
