A Long Island man won the grilled cheese-eating championship at the Arkansas State Fair on Saturday, stuffing down 19 sandwiches in the 10-minute race.
The prize for Ed "Cookie" Jarvis, of Nesconset, N.Y., was $1,000. He will join other first-place winner in competing for the world championship title at a time and place yet to be announced. Second place went to Patrick Philbin of Moonachie, N.J., who devoured 17 and a half sandwiches.
All of the six contestants finished without getting sick, says Michael Castellano of the International Federation of Competitive Eating. Little Rock was the 11th city on the 15-city circuit of the GoldenPalace.com World Grilled Cheese-Eating Championship. GoldenPalace.com is the Web site that spent $28,000 on an e-bay auction to purchase a grilled cheese sandwich that was believed to have the image of the Virgin Mary.
