Kathleen and Waldo Tarbell are just three years junior of the couple that holds the world record for the longest marriage among living people. Now being married for almost 80 years, the Maine couple has all the memories of their youth still afresh and plans to celebrate their big day on Saturday at the Oceanview Nursing Home.
Waldo, 101 and Kathleen, who turns 100 in June, met at a dance party in Charlotte and fell in love at the very first sight. The couple married in 1927 and since then has been together.
"I fell head over my stomach [for him]," says Kathleen, according to The Bangor Daily news.
Mother of two and now great-great grandmother of several, Kathleen recall the tough days the couple had spent together.
"Sometimes it'd be 10 o'clock at night before we'd get done. We'd go into work at eight in the morning. By the time we got home and got turned over in bed it was time to get up again," she told The Bangor Daily news.
Kathleen, apparently a staunch Democrat has been successful in transforming Waldo's view, originally a Republican.
"She converted me," he said.
The State's Office of Vital Records could not immediately determine if the Tarbells' marriage is the longest in Maine, the Daily reports.
The current record for the longest marriage among living people lies with a Rhode Island couple who have been wed for 83 years.
