A Malaysian official on Monday warned taxi drivers in the capital Kuala Lumpur to dress properly. Otherwise, drivers caught not wearing the proper attire, will be fined heavily.

Taxi drivers in the city are required to wear only white shirts which should be tucked. They are banned from wearing any other color while driving their cabs.

Markiman Kobiran, Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board said, pants must be dark colored, no sandals are allowed, and leather shoes must be worn with socks on.

"Even though it's trivial, it reflects the entire profession," Markiman said.

Those taxi drivers caught not properly dressed will pay a fine of up to $87.

Many taxi drivers are not thrilled with the new uniform requirement or possible fines, especially since they only earn $20 a day, says Richard Leow, secretary of a local taxi drivers' association.
