FBI officials have arrested a man suspected of smuggling two Mexican migrants into the United States and selling them as part of a sex slave trade.
Eliseo Escalante Santizo, 30, of Fort Myers, was taken into custody Monday at the Lee County Justice Center for a court hearing on unrelated charges of battery and resisting an officer with violence.
Santizo has been indicted on human trafficking and forced prostitution charges.
Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Doug Molloy says the 24- and 14-year-old female victims were smuggled into the United States through Arizona in August and transported to Florida.
Santizo sold them in Fort Myers where they were told they had to work as prostitutes to pay off a $2,700 debt.
The women escaped when left alone in an Immokalee motel room in August.
