A New Hampshire man who bought a pack of cigarette at a gas station using a debit card was surprised to find out later that the purchase cost him $23 quadrillion or many times the national debt.
Upon returning home, Josh Muszynski checked online his Bank of America card account and it showed the price of the cigarette as $23,148,855,308,184,500. His account also indicated he was charged $15 in overdraft fee.
A puzzled and worried Muszynski went back to the store seeking a correction but the cashier was unable to fix the problem.
Muszynski referred the matter to a Bank of America official, who also failed to explain the numbers after a two-hour conversation over the phone. But the official promised to fix the problem.
The error was corrected a day later and Muszynski saw online the $23 quadrillion debt erased from his account statement.
How the overdraft occurred remains a mystery as card issuer Visa also has no explanation.
