In an attempt to raise awareness for HIV, homelessness, and in support for the medical use of marijuana, a man has been traveling across the United States on his bike, all the while pedaling backwards.
Starting last August in California, 36-year old cyclist Curan Wright has been cycling backwards through different states, with his navigation based solely on his peripheral vision.
Recently stopping in Florida, Curan expressed his frustration towards the officials in Washington who refused to allow him to meet with the lawmakers.
"They act like they don't have to hear me," the UPI quoted Curan, who was himself diagnosed with HIV 19 months ago. "I don't have money. I'm a nobody to them. I'm just a homeless man with HIV, who got it on my own because I didn't practice safe sex and used needles."
Wright admitted to engaging in "disgusting" activities, such as having sex for money to fund his methamphetamine habit.
Having trashed the habit, Wright said he aims to do good with his life. He recently told the Miami Herald that he had traveled through every weather, even going up and down 8,000 feet-high mountain passes.
Along with caseworker Abdu Brown from Santa Monica's Common Ground, an HIV community center, Wright handed out flyers to people, explaining his goal and his cause.
"Initially, I didn't believe him when he told me about his plans," said Brown. "But he did a lot of foot work necessary to do the ride. I said, 'If you are serious, I'll work with you and do what I can to support you.'"
"It was quite a freakish, slightly surreal experience," said Owen Darbishire, a tourist from Oxford, upon seeing Wright pedaling backward on the Florida Keys roads. "Visually, he looked like he was riding his bicycle towards us, but when we got closer we realized he was riding backwards."
Wright is self-medicating while on his trip, and has crashed only once.
