A computer technician driving on the directions of a rental car's Global Positioning System found himself jumping out of the way as a train came barreling through his vehicle.
The driver, Bo Bai, on the orders of the GPS system, turned his vehicle right, crossing train tracks. Upon doing so, the car was caught on the tracks, as the Harlem line train was chugging towards it. Bai attempted to wave to the engineer, but failed to catch his attention.
Bai lept out of the way as the train crashed into the Ford Focus at 60 mph, pushing it more than 100 feet, according to Metro-North railroad spokesman Dan Bruckner.
Bruckner furthered that Bai was cited for obstructing a railroad crossing, pointing out that the accident destroyed about 250 of the railroad.
Bruckner said that the total cost was about "in the hundreds of thousands of dollars," for which Bai and the rental car company would be liable.
According to Eyewitness News, Bai told the police officials that he thought that he was turning the car onto Saw Mill River Parkway North. Authorities determined that he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The accident caused no injuries, but about 500 passengers of the train were stranded for more than two hours. It also caused the cancellation of three trains and the delay of ten more for about 90 minutes. The results of the accident were said to have affected more than 10,000 people.
