A street performer dressed as Chewbacca was arrested Thursday after butting a tour guide operator in the head in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, according to police. The tour guide said the man in the Chewbacca costume exploded after he asked him to stop bothering two Japanese tourists.
The man in the costume, 44-year-old Frederick Evan Young, is one of many street performers who flock to Grauman's Chinese Theater to entertain tourists. Last year the city passed an ordinance to prevent incidents like the one Young is involved in after tourists complained performers would get aggressive and abusive if they didn't pay for pictures.
The tour guide, Brian Sapir, told the Los Angeles Times that Young, who is 6-foot-5, got angry after he asked him to leave the tourists alone.
"You could see in his eyes he was exploding beneath the mask," Sapir said. "He yelled at me, 'Nobody tells this wookiee what to do!'"
Sapir, 32, said a security guard suggested that Young go for a walk down Hollywood Boulevard to cool off, but that it only made things worse.
"He threw off his mask and walked toward me and slammed his head into my forehead," he said.
Police Lt. Paul Vernon said security guards escorted Young off the property.
